Looking Forward

I know we're on the cusp of the most celebrated day of the whole year, but when the big day is over and you start to think all the excitement is done until spring rolls around, you might look forward to a field trip if you're a homeschooler.  On Tuesday, January 25th we will venture to the downtown library.  Activities will include a tour, instruction on the Dewey Decimal system, a "hands on" tutorial for the older kids to learn to use the computer system, and activities for the younger kids too.  It will start at noon and end around 2pm.  More details will come when I pull out my January list, for now, I'll let you return your focus to the joyous event we have before us to celebrate!

Merry Christmas to you all!

Gift Wrapping In the Mood

Got loads of presents to wrap but no oomph to get going?  (Suddenly the laundry looks like fun!?!)  Woman, you got troubles...but I have a little help to offer you:  Amazon has free Christmas (and other) music downloads.  Here's a link to the "25 Days of Free" Christmas song page.  Here's another place. Surely a few of these can help put you in the mood!  (or at least delay the gift wrapping!)

How can we get more users here? This is such a great way to communicate! You six users have any ideas on how to get others on here? I thought the 8th grade test would generate some fun comments...thanks CB for emailing me at least!

digital camera users!

I have two compactFlash cards for a digital camera. Anyone need extras? If you don't know what kind your camera takes, just take out your memory stick/card and see if it says compactFlash on it. Yours for the taking...

Change of Mail Delivery

I have changed the time of email delivery for this blog.  It used to be 5am but with some things occuring "today" (like the free Veggie Tales songs I just posted,)  I thought it might be better to have the delivery still occur today (while the offer is still relevant.)  So, I've changed the delivery time to occur between 3pm & 5pm.  That means if you find out about something helpful only for the day, you should be able to post it at 2:45 and expect the email gang will receive it in the next couple hours and (hopefully) use it!

Free Veggie Tales Christmas Song Dowload

I just came from Amazon.com where I downloaded the Veggietales Christmas album, "The Incredible Singing Christmas Tree" to my iTunes.  It's free today, Tuesday, November 2.  Here is the link for it.

Planetarium Details...

Here are a few of the details about the Planetarium trip... I will post more by Wednesday.

There will be two shows... the first one will be a live presentation about the sun and seasons the second one will be a multi-media show about stargazing (see below for the BGSU descriptions of the shows). Dale, the man running the planetarium at BGSU, said he recommends 1st through 5th grade but will tailor the show to our audience. He also suggested making sure that the kids know their directions (north, south, east, west) before coming.

The total cost for both shows is $2 per person (if you choose to only go to one show it will still be $2 per person). The first show will start promptly at 1:30, be followed by a stretch/bathroom break and the second show will conclude by 3:30 or 4. Please be aware that you will need to allow time for parking and that it costs $5 per car. On Monday November 1st I will e-mail out a list of who is coming so you can arrange your own carpool if you would like. Please let Rebekah Wing or Julie Morgan know if you would like to come and be sure to get your money to either of us by Thursday November 4th.

The seating capacity is 118 people so it is first come first serve :)

other things to note - no food, no cell phones, no flash photography, or flashing SHOES are allowed

The BGSU descriptions....
The sun and seasons - a lesson on how the sun moves across our sky in different seasons and why there are seasons. The sun's sky path at other latitudes is also shown in order to illustrate the midnight sun and the opposite seasons of the southern hemisphere. The lessons begins with an explanation of why the Sun shines.

amazing stargazing - a light-hearted and comprehensive guide to sky watching, covering constellations, the Sun the Moon , the planets, and other sights of the night sky (196 slides plus video, 35+ minutes)

Free Booster Seat

I have a tall booster seat to anyone who could use it.  It's the kind with the back.  If you have questions about it, feel free to ask.  It is actually my from Sally, my mother-in-law and she would be able to answer questions about it better than I.  BUT it's sitting in my foyer, staring at me every time I walk by it, so it will only be here until Wednesday afternoon (the 20th).   Then it will be blessing someone at Savers!

Free Picaboo Photo Book Offer

Picaboo is rewarding new customers with a free 8.5×11 Hardcover Photo Book (20 pages) using the coupon code FALLBK (up to $39.99 value) if this is your first purchase with Picaboo. You do need to pay $8.99 shipping (which will take 3 to 5 days) plus applicable sales tax. You do need to download their design software (it’s not designed on their website), but it’s easy to use (and faster to access the photos on your computer).  This coupon code expires on Monday, October 25

I did this at the end of August, I love it. The shipping time was accurate too.  The book is on my coffee table and others pick it up and ooh and ahh over it too.  I would absolutely recommend this product.  It took me about a week (on and off) from the time I started as there are lots of options for backgrounds and page layouts to play with.  You could do it in less time if you've done it before but if you like to walk away from a project, go back, change things around, etc.  I would recommend starting today!

FYI:  I learned of this in my email today from "Freebies 4 Mom" (you don't have to be a mom though.)  I would say 4 out of 7 days there are "free" (usually have to pay S&H) photos or photobooks of some kind or another you can get from various places. So if you are a interested, you can sign up your own self!
Here are click-by-click instructions if you need them:
2. Click “Submit!” (gray button)
3. Coupon code FREEBK appears on the screen (they also email it to you)
4. Click “Get Started Now” (green button)
5. Click “Launch Picaboo” (black button) to install Picaboo on your computer (they also email you instructions).
6. Start designing your free photo book, this offer expires on Monday, October 25.

Notebooks 3 cents @ Target

I just returned (9/17 @ 5p) from Target (Spring Meadows-farthest, back-wall clearance corner of the store) they have those 70 page, 1 subject notebooks for 3cents each, & the thicker 90 pagers (with a prettier cover) are 12 cents each.

We did a great little BYBC craft in Mexico with these:  Cut/tear colorful construction paper into angular shaped pieces (like triangles, trapezoids, and random shapes,) glue pieces with edges overlapping so notebook cover is obscured (a stained glass effect) and let dry. Taking clear contact paper, adhere it on the inside cover, (just short of the spiral) and (pressing as you go) wrap around to the front-over the "stained glass", again, stop just short of the spiral binding.  Voila-fun, easy craft.

Zappos.com Free VIP membership for overnight shipping

Have you ever shopped at Zappos.com?  They have name brand shoes, clothes, small household appliances and housewares.  I use them when I know exactly what I want but it's not easy to find locally (eg. Dansko shoes.)  They are great because they always offer free shipping and free NO HASSLE returns on any item.  (If I remember correctly, they include everything needed for a return when they ship the order.)  Now, they're even greater!  Why?  Glad you asked, it's 'cuz of their current promo offering free upgrades to VIP memberships which means the free shipping is now overnight!

I imagine they would be really convenient for those with little ones (wow, no more trying to shop for shoes and shower gifts with squirmy littles!?!) and those with busy schedules or who don't like to shop.   So, if you know what you want, but aren't sure what size or color, you can order 2 or even 3 today and tomorrow see which is best and return what you don't want.  Go here to read the explanation and see the link by freebies4mom (which is how I found out about it) and here to go directly to the Zappos sign-up site!  I hope you like it.

Wisdom seeking.... younger kids

Since Lynnette sent out an e-mail basically asking people to make use of this blog, I thought I would start by asking people to post comments on suggestions of what to do with your younger kids while you are homeschooling the older ones. I could use some wisdom from some of you "verteran" homeschoolers ;)

Freebies 4 Mom

Some of you have requested I post the link to this site:

Freebies 4 Mom is a website that tells about discounts and deals.  Things from printable coupons to sweepstakes and games (not the kind where you have to sign up to buy stuff, but the legit, easy, no strings attached kind-I've never been burned on one yet and I know of others who participate and also have had no problems) to free and discounted photobooks.

I have "won" a buy-one-get-one-free coupon & a T-shirt from the daily SoBe sweeps game.  I know of people from our group who have won $10 & $15 (or more) gift cards for Baskin Robins and Lowes too.  I also recently took advantage of a free photo book from Picaboo (I did have to pay $8 for S&H) but it's a $30 item.  It came in one week and the quality is great-I was certainly pleased with the results.

There is a Snapfish discount offer right now.  There is also a link to $2 off one bottle Hidden Valley Ranch dressing coupon.  There is another for a freebie at Bath & Body Works-no purchase necessary.

The "author" does a nice job of telling you any caveats to the deals or your chances of winning, etc.  I subscribe to them and receive the daily offers in my inbox.

Practices are starting this September 19th. They will be held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings at 5:15pm before evening services in the Sanctuary of the SDA building. You do not need to RSVP until the first practice. There is no cost. Please feel free to ask Tyson or Jennifer Turner any questions. Watch for the choir director’s cape!

Art Class Info in Petersburg, MI

See below a note regarding a Art Class offered in Petersburg, Michigan this Fall.

Hello!

I am pleased to announce that The Classical Tutor will be offering an art class this
year.

We will be meeting at the Summerfield-Petersburg library bi-weekly beginning
September 13, 2010 from 10:00 -10:55 a.m. The address is:
60 East Center St.
Petersburg, MI 49270
Phone: (734) 279-1025

Please contact me as soon as possible with the names and ages of the children
you would like to enroll.

Tamara Menas
theclassicaltutor@yahoo.com

About me: My name is Hope Garrity. I am seventeen and mostly homeschooled. I have been taking art and spanish at Bedford High School. I have won the outstanding artist award at Bedford three years running, and have won a couple other art awards as well. I have also had my artwork displayed in the Focus show at BG last year, and will have more displayed at this year's Focus show at UT. I am currently looking at art schools and plan to major in an art related field.

Class goals: My number one goal for this class is to take every student at his/her talent level, and help him to move forward in his journey as an artist. As time allows, we will be exploring a little bit of color theory, still-life, and self-portraiture. We will also hopefully get to do some one-point perspective, landscape, and a little bit of multimedia. All of these projects I have planned are easily adaptable to your student's age, talent level, and interests. Depending on how quickly the students finish their projects, we may or may not get to all of the projects I just outlined. However, you can rest assured that your students will receive well rounded and personal instruction in a variety of media and projects. If students do not finish their projects in class, they can take them home to finish them. I will also assign minimal homework. Your student will not be required to complete it, but I think that it would greatly benefit them to do a little bit of work at home on the weeks we don't have class.

Supplies: These are items that your student will need for this class. If you have them at home or want to purchase them yourself, great. But if you would like me to purchase them for you, I can do that and you can reimburse me. Please email me if you want me to get them for you.
regular pencil
8 or 12 set of colored pencils (Crayola is preferable)
basic watercolor set (again, Crayola has a nice set)
White glue
This is all your student will need for this class, but if your student would like to use something else, say ballpoint pen for example, he/she would be welcome to bring that in and I will instruct them in that medium. For some projects I will require that all the students work in a specific medium, but other projects will be open to his/her choice. One thing that I will NOT allow students to bring in is paint. No paint. I say that because it is messy and in most cases extremely difficult to clean up. If your student is interested in using a medium other than pencil, colored pencil, or watercolor, please let me know at the beginning of the session so I can tell you if that would be feasible.

Cost: I will be providing paper and erasers, as well as various other supplies needed for specific projects out of a $5 supplies fee per student. The actual lessons will be $20 per student for the first session (12 weeks- 6 lessons).

*There is a $5.00 registration fee per family for The Classical Tutor.

Young People's Concerts-Toledo Symphony

Hi Everyone!

Our new school year is nearly upon us...which means it's the perfect time to lock in that field trip. There are only two Young People's Concert dates this season - so space is limited. The sooner you talk to administration...the sooner we can lock you in for one (or both!) of our exciting programs:

November 11, 2010 – 9:45 and 11:00
Take Me Out to the Orchestra
The orchestra is a team, and each instrument and musician plays an important role in creating a winning performance. Learn about each team member through performances of selections from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Copland's Rodeo. There’s no better way to show your students all of the parts of the symphony orchestra!

February 17, 2011 – 9:45 and 11:00
Science of Sound
In partnership with Imagination Station, we explore the instrument families and musical concepts like pitch and volume by uncovering the science behind them. Join us in a scientific experiment to dissect the orchestra through selections from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite.
Tickets are still only $4 per student, and chaperones get in free. Introduce your students to the thrill of the orchestra by making your reservation for the 2010/2011 Young People’s Concerts by phone (419.418.0041) or email (sclark@toledosymphony.com) today!  I look forward to hearing from you,

HOME SCHOOL RIDING LESSON PROGRAM
Stonehaven Farms offers a special lesson program to area Home School students that have a love of horses and would like to learn to ride. Beginning in the fall of 2008, this curriculum based riding program is tailored specifically for the needs of Home School students and their families. The lesson program includes an orientation to the facility, hands on instruction in grooming, tacking and leading a horse, and beginning riding skills at the walk and trot. Lessons may also be tailored to more advanced levels as needed.
All Home School groups are eligible. A minimum of 3 riders must sign up for the program to begin a new lesson group, or students may join an existing Home School lesson group. Riding lessons must take place on weekdays during traditional school hours. Riders that commit to a monthly lesson schedule will enjoy a cost of $20 per lesson. Per lesson rate is $30. Cash or checks only... No credit cards accepted.
Stonehaven Farms is aware of the unique opportunity that Home Schoolers have to research a subject matter and explore it to the fullest. Our trainer, having an education background, is more than willing to work with the Home School curriculum to provide more in depth study on various subjects in the equestrian field.

Welcome to the Nook...

This is our new homeschool virtual community put together by LeeAnn, Julie V., and myself (Lynnette) for the end of connecting all our homeschool worlds.  If you are a CTWC homeschooler (or even a non-homeschooler of CTWC) you can have an "author" login for this website.  That way, you can post things here that you want to share.  LeeAnn and I will be administrators, with super-powers over the site but it's really intended to be a site by ALL of us, for ALL of us.  So contact one of us admins if you don't have "author" access and we'll hook you up.
