Homeschool Check

I have been packed into vans, hotel rooms, and museums this past week surrounded by bunches of homeschoolers at Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. There were a range of reactions to groups of children, from a mean docent lady who made me cry to the sweet elderly lady who approached the boys (dressed up in period clothes) to ask how they were enjoying the week, why they decided to dress that way, and what they had been learning. There were all kinds of homeschoolers too. Of course there were the winsome, the well behaved, the rowdy and rambunctious, and the rotund preteen bellyacher with the helpless, indulgent mother  (he was my least favorite-not in our group btw!) At the end of the week I received some feedback about our group in particular.

All this has my me thinking homeschooling, kid raising stuff (too much tv? too little discipline? too much discipline? not enough hot chocolate and fun time?) and lo and behold I come across a homeschool article by way of a link from Nancy Wilson. I really appreciated it.  It is here. Go, check it out for yourself, it was a good "check" for myself!

Hot Kitchen-Gear Deals

Hey Bargain Hunters:  There is a "Going Out of Business" sale at Kitchen Tools and Skills in Perrysburg. They will be closing their doors on (I think) May 15 (I know it's in May after Mother's Day.)  Right now some things are marked down and everything in the store is an additional 25% off.

The best deal I saw was Wustoff knives.  A specific example is a 7" Santoku knife (see it here) that's normally $125. It's marked down to $70 and there's an additional 25% off that, which makes it about $50.

They are also selling their racks, display shelves, kitchen appliances (including a commercial stove and hood,) and gadgets that they've used in the store to teach classes, etc.  There is a table with "gently" used things from their kitchen.

If you aren't familiar, here's the link to get you there: Kitchen Tools and Skills.

Bible studies with Little Ones...Any Thoughts?

Renee Brunner has a question that many of us would (I'm sure) be encouraged to hear each other's answers to: What are you using for Bible study with young children (4-6 yoa)?
We just finished Leading Little Ones to God, by Marian Schoolhand (sp?). Which is already loaned to a friend. We really enjoyed it and will do it again, but are looking for something different. We  have family devotionals at night which are Bible readings and teachings by Dad. I am looking for something structured to use in the mornings.

Due to privacy concerns, I won't post Renee's email here. You can email her if you have it, but you should "comment" on this blog and answer it for all of us to be encouraged!

FIELDTRIP: Dewey Want Resourceful Kids?

Of course we do!  Join me at the downtown library on Tuesday, January 25 to learn about the Dewey decimal system and the use of the library's computers.

If you've never been there, this a lovely library and the children's library is really cool.  The younger kids will have the opportunity to have a story time and tour the children's library while the older ones (3rd or 4th grade and up) learn the Dewey Decimal stuff.  We will all tour the whole library.

The outing starts at noon and ends around 2:00.  I forgot to ask the lady about parking (and she's at lunch now.)  This would be the only cost.  It is charged by the car and the amount of time and I think $5 would be a safe estimate.  I will double check to see if this is waived for our group.  There is a cafe where drinks and food could be purchased.  Exact meeting place and time (it may be 11:50) To Be Announced.

Please RSVP:  lynnettek@sbcglobal.net with the names of attendees, and the ages of the kiddos!
